The cost of parking in Cedarhurst will be 100 percent higher beginning this weekend. The village will be raising the price of parking in its lots from 25 cents to 50 cents per hour.

Meters on Cedarhurst’s streets are already 50 cents an hour, said Mayor Benjamin Weinstock, who noted that the increase was approved two years ago, but not instituted until now due to rising municipal expenses. There are roughly 2,240 parking spaces in the village nearly evenly split between the parking lot and spots on the streets.

“We were looking at the village financing and we have so many things to do, Weinstock said. “We felt that this was a fair way to raise funds without raising taxes.”

Cedarhurst officials said that are planning to replace all street lighting with LED lights as well as repaving and improving drainage on the village’s roads.

“The money from the meters are also allocated towards repairing these parking lots,” Weinstock said, “ so we figured the most fair thing would be that the people using these lots are the ones paying for it’s upkeep.”
