Donald and Hillary: Whom do we like less?

Posted

This year’s presidential campaign will go down as one of the ugliest in history. Why? Because it seems like no one likes either candidate. Over the past couple of weeks, all I’ve heard from my friends and neighbors is that they feel as if they’re choosing between the lesser of two evils.

In the business of politics, positives and negatives always define a candidate. This year, with less than six months to go, each leading candidate is going above and beyond to expose his or her opponent’s negatives. And, for better or worse, each has an abundance of material due to the fact that no presidential candidates have ever had higher negatives than Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

American voters flat out do not like either of them. According to a recent Fox News poll, 61 percent of voters have a negative view of Clinton. Trump didn’t fare much better, with 56 percent of voters sharing an unfavorable view of him. Believe it or not, this is good news for Trump. Two months ago that number was at 65 percent, at the time a record high.

In their sparring back and forth, nothing appears to be off limits, including Bill Clinton’s alleged sexual history and Trump’s failed marriages and financial misadventures. Hillary’s negatives have been on a steady incline. She is a career Democratic politician, currently under investigation by a Democratic administration and the FBI for use of a private email server while she was secretary of state. The American public believes she has broken the law and has been covering it up.

Veteran political observer Stuart Rothenberg rightfully observed that because the two candidates are so well known, it’s going to be difficult to change the public’s perception of them. That’s tough news considering that both Trump and Clinton are making disastrous candidates such as Bob Dole and Walter Mondale look beloved.
