Family Fall Festival on October 18

Freeport is the place to be no matter what the season. On Sunday, Oct. 18, residents and visitors alike will celebrate autumn on the Nautical Mile at the Family Fall Festival and Fire Expo. The festival features a variety of activities for the young and the young-at heart.

The festival is cosponsored by the Village of Freeport, the Freeport Chamber of Commerce and the Freeport Fire Department.

“We are very excited about this festival,” said Mayor Robert Kennedy. “It’s a great time of year; a great time to be outdoors and be on the Nautical Mile.”
In past years, the Fall Family Festival was held in the Freeport Recreation Center and included a costume parade for children and the Freeport Fire Department’s annual fire expo. “That was before Sandy,” Victoria Dinelli, director of the Recreation Center, said. “This event is going to be bigger and better with many more activities.”

A warm-up event opens the festivities on Saturday, Oct. 17. An amusement park with rides for children will be open at Sea Breeze Park from noon to 7 p.m. You can return on Sunday for more rides at Sea Breeze Park before your children participate in the Halloween Costume and Village Parade. Ghost, goblins and ghouls are welcome, as are princesses, super heroes and any other creature that springs from one’s imagination. “We are encouraging the kids to dress up in costume and have fun,” Dinelli said.

Participants will line-up at 1 p.m. at Sea Breeze Park and stroll down the Nautical Mile to the parking lot across from the Esplanade. In addition to costumed guests, the parade will include fire vehicles.

Dressing up isn’t just for kids. Adults may participate in the Trunk or Treat event. Decorate your car’s open trunk for Halloween and distribute treats to the children. “Kids go from car to car to get treats the village will supply,” Dinelli explained.

The Freeport Fire Department’s 27th Fire Expo will also be held across the street from the Esplanade, from 1 to 4 p.m. It will feature exhibits and games aimed to teach residents about fire prevention and safety. There will be games and giveaways for children.
