Hempstead Town investigates racist incident

Town of Hempstead officials are investigating a racist incident at a town Highway Department facility in Levittown.

A picture of a monkey was found displayed on a department bulletin board in reference to an African-American employee, according to a town news release. At press time, officials had not released the picture and did not say when it was posted.

Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad and Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin gathered at the Market Lane facility on Tuesday afternoon. They and several local African-American clergy and community leaders prayed together in a show of unity.

Town officials have reportedly referred the matter to Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice, and they are planning their own investigation. Officials added that all employees at the facility would receive new and intensive diversity training.
