Memorial Day in Freeport

Thousands of Freeporters lined Merrick Road on Monday, May 25, to watch the Memorial Day Parade, that honored Freeport’s veterans and remembered those who died in service to their country. This year’s Grand Marshals, all World War II veterans, were paid a special tribute.

The parade was organized by members of the American Legion – William Clinton Story Post in Freeport and featured four divisions of marchers including Mayor Robert Kennedy and the board of trustees, various branches of Village government, the fire department and police as well as Town of Hemsptead and Nassau County officials. Superintendent of Schools Kishore Kuncham and trustees also marched, along with the children from each of Freeport’s schools and the Freeport Memorial Library. There was also representation from numerous local organizations, churches and civic groups.
A memorial service followed, including the laying of the wreaths. Freeport Librarian Regina Feeney was keynote speaker. Mayor Robert Kennedy also spoke.
