On Monday, the World War I Trench Mortar Trophy Cannon was moved from its location on Sunrise Highway and placed at the William Martin Park on Guy Lombardo Avenue. The Trench Mortar Trophy Cannon, a 240-millimeter gun, was obtained by the DPB Mott Post of the Grand Army Republic here in Freeport and given to the American Legion in a ceremony on Memorial Day in 1921. The Trench Mortar required a seven-man crew and was pulled by horse and wagon.

“We are so glad the village was able to move the cannon to this location,” Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy said. “It looks great here and honors our veterans.”
