Mayor Robert Kennedy, village trustees, County Executive Edward Mangano and County Legislators Laura Curran and Steve Rhoads attended a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday of this week to launch a $5 million revitalization and beautification project of North Main Street in Freeport. This streetscaping project includes new sidewalks, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant access, supplemental decorative street lighting, tree plantings, street furniture (waste baskets, benches and planters), enhanced cross walks for pedestrian safety and new bus shelters. The project goes from Brooklyn Avenue and proceeds north on North Main Street to Seaman Avenue. The Village of Freeport has taken out a short term bond for $5 million that will be reimbursed by Nassau County. North Main Street is a county road.

Mayor Kennedy told residents at last week’s village board meeting that the initial phase of the project will include construction of “bump out” ramps for handicapped access along North Main at Prince, Craig, Leonard, Lena, Grand, Randall and Brooklyn and at Stevens Street. This phase will cost $1.25 million.
The project also includes the installation of 39 benches, 29 decorative trash receptacles, 70 new trees, 62 decorative street lighting arms with high efficiency LED lightning and 30 additional LED lights along the west side of North Main Street.

The revitalization and beautification project is designed to make the area safer and more attractive to the next generation of Long Islanders, often described as Millienials, said a press release issued by the Village.
