Way cool – Freeport tops list of great American towns

Now everyone knows that Freeport is one of the best towns (or should I say villages) to live and visit. Matador Network, a travel website, named Freeport as the 7th coolest American town because of its diverse mix of people and its waterfront location including the Nautical Mile.

“We already knew Freeport is a cool place,” said Charlie Hirschberg, President of the Freeport Chamber of Commerce and the owner of the Nassau Hobby Shop in Freeport. “Anyone who’s spent a summer evening along our waterfront knows there’s no place like Freeport. Still, it’s an incredible feeling to have others recognize what a special place Freeport is.”

Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy said, “It’s not luck that we were named a cool town.” In addition to its diversity and the Nautical Mile, “we are centrally located village between Jones Beach and the Nassau Coliseum,” Kennedy said. “We are the second largest village in New York State and we are the fishing capital of the northeast. We own our own electric power plant; we have our own wells and provide water. We have the best Police Department, best Fire Department, DPW Department and staff.”

Cynthia Krieg, Village Historian and Landmark’s Commissioner added, “We’ve been around along time, since 1659, and the people who live here appreciate our history. I’m thrilled about this designation and I believe it’s due in part to our historical background.”

Oh Freeport – how do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
