Culinary arts student is a state champion

Maverick Kandel, an East Meadow student studying culinary arts at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, took third place in the Commercial Banking category of the New York State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships. The Nassau BOCES board recently honored Kandel for his accomplishment.

Maverick participated in a series of timed events related to his course of study at Barry Tech, as well as in contests in leadership and professional development. The state competition is one in a national series of events SkillsUSA sponsors as part of its mission to provide our country with a competitive, skilled workforce.

The competition fits in with the SkillsUSA mission to provide the country with a competitive, skilled workforce. A partnership of students, teachers and industry leaders, SkillsUSA prepares high school and college students to become leaders in the business world. Its program helps establish industry standards for job-skill training and instills a respect for community service in its participants. The U.S. Department of Labor recognizes SkillsUSA as a "successful model of an employer-driven youth development program."
