EmPower Solar hosts student competition

EmPower Solar, an Island Park, solar energy company, has opened registration for its annual student competition, co-hosted this year by Hofstra University. The competition challenges high school students to use science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and creativity to analyze the potential for solar in their own communities. Winners will receive scholarship prizes, internship opportunities, and a grand-prize trip to the 2015 Solar Decathlon in Irvine, California.

High school student teams of two from Long Island and New York City can register for the competition online at empower-solar.com/-2015-Student-Competition-Registration

The competition aims to encourage the spirit of innovation, collaboration, and teamwork through a community-focused project, similar to the U.S. Department of Energy’s competition.

“Each year we are inspired by the creativity and determination of the student teams,” said David Schieren, CEO of EmPower Solar and co-founder the Solar Decathlon Alumni Association, “EmPower Solar was born out of the D.O.E. competition in 2005, and we are proud to encourage the next generation of renewable energy entrepreneurs.”

This year, Hofstra University is offering $6,000 in scholarship prizes to the top three placing teams.

The competition’s Family Solar Night Awards Ceremony will be hosted at the university in July.

Students, teachers, and parents are encouraged to contact studentsolarcomp@empower-solar.com for more information about the competition. All information about this year’s competition and entries from prior years can be found on the “Events” page of EmPower Solar’s website.
