Voters went to the polls Dec. 9 to elect new Fire Commissioners in both Oceanside and the Barnum Island section of Island Park.

Michael Graham was running unopposed in Oceanside. “My youth and business experience can help the Oceanside Board of Fire Commissioners accomplish their number one objective, to have a modern, efficient Fire District without putting a burden on our taxpayers,” Graham wrote in an email to the Herald. “One of the most important tasks a Fire Commissioner has is making sure the firefighters have the best equipment and training possible.”

Graham also said that he would like to create a training facility at Fireman’s Field.

Christopher Jordan, owner of the Christopher T. Jordan Funeral Home in Island Park, was elected over Alan Greenfield by 77 to 16 in Barnum Island. Jordan said he ran for commissioner because “I want to keep the relationship between the Barnum Island Fire District and the Village of Island Park Fire Department.” The Barnum Island district contracts with Island Park for fire services. While it does not have a firehouse, the members are working on a new building for meetings. Jordan said the new structure would be “a community place, a multipurpose space that can be used as a meeting hall.” He added there would be no cost to use the facility.

Jordan replaced former Commissioner Nestor Zapelli who offered congratulations to Jordan, and thanked the members that served with him, “You are a group of people who epitomize citizenship and respect for all. Each of you continually rises above any occasion to keep the citizens of this community safe.”
