Holiday fun at the Long Island Festival of Trees

Santa visits the Cradle of Aviation

The turkey has been eaten and we’re ready to greet the holiday season head on. One place that’s filled with holiday spirit this weekend is Museum Row, in Garden City, where the Festival of Trees welcomes families to its annual three-day extravaganza, Friday through Sunday, Nov. 29-Dec. 1. This unique event returns — after being washed away by Superstorm Sandy last year — to the Cradle of Aviation Museum, bringing together artisans, entertainers, volunteers and the community to share some holiday fun.
As always, the trees are the star of the weekend’s festivities. The display of 33 6 1/2-foot trees and 300 2-foot mini-trees commands attention from the moment visitors walk into the museum’s atrium. Each is decorated with a unique theme. Gaze upon the festively adorned “Season’s Sweetings,” “The 25 Days of Christmas at Old Westbury Gardens,” “Birds of a Feather,” “The Fashion Tree,” “Winter Wonderland,” “Fire Toys of Joy,” “50 Shades of White,” “Candyland Christmas,” “Precious Moments, Precious Memories,” “The Empire Strikes the Cradle,” and “Wild Winter Wonderland,” among the many creations on display.
The Baldwin Homemakers, Rockville Centre’s Long Island Quilter’s Society, Flowers by Voegler of Merrick, Baldwin’s Precious Moments Club, Old Westbury Gardens, and Cradle of Aviation Museum, are some of the many local businesses and organizations that contribute trees.
Other impressive tree designs include this year’s entry by East Meadow’s Peggy Bridgewater. She has been designing trees for the festival for many years. This season Bridgewater contributes “Christmas Plaid in Loving Memory of Larry Pierce.’
