Island Park Schools closed Wednesday Feb. 10.

Superintendent of Schools Rosmarie Bovino announced the closure in a posted letter on the district’s web page. In addition Thursday, Feb. 10 and Friday, Feb. 11, early morning activities in both schools are cancelled and parents should use the early morning bus to pick-up children who live in areas that are most susceptible to flooding.

“If we have identified your child, you will receive a message from us tomorrow [Wednesday] night giving you the bus stop and pick-up time at about 7:30 a.m., Bovino said, “Our principals and several of the teachers will arrive early at both buildings to ensure adequate supervision of these children. High tides are supposed to be at 9:58 a.m. on Thursday and 10:52 a.m. on Friday, so it should not affect the morning arrival nearly to the extent it did Monday and Tuesday. However, be aware, there are mitigating factors that can affect these times. Please be aware, we have postponed the Hegarty PE demo until after the February break.”

“ I know this has been a difficult week for you,” Bovino wrote, “The rising tides have created impassable roads in some locations. This resulted in several school buses not getting to their respective stops. As you know, as long as we believe the schools are safe, we do our best to keep them open. We want as little disruption as possible to family life as well as to the continuity of learning for our students.

“The administrators, clerical staff, and custodians and I have carefully reviewed our alternatives these past two days and Island Park Schools have remained open with the support of Nassau BOCES and the local police.”

Bovino went on to explain the Nassau County Police Department’s Fourth Precinct extended the shift of the crossing guards at key locations for both schools. In addition, she said, the district had custodians directing parents in cars for the protection of school children. Bovino added that all of the staff, principals, teachers, and even school board members have all provided assistance.
