Lincoln Orens students get motivated

Posted

The Island Park PTA sponsored a motivational speaker, Rohan Murphy, for the students of Lincoln Orens Middle School. An Islip resident, Murphy lost his legs at the age of four, but that did not stop him from wrestling his freshman year of high school. After a successful high school wrestling career he went on to wrestle at Penn State University. In addition to wrestling, Rohan Murphy is also an accomplished powerlifter, competing in international competitions all over the world representing the USA.

Murphy talked about his middle and high school days, the angst of not fitting in, the anger and frustration he felt because he was disabled. His middle school gym teacher asked Murphy to be a sports team manager; he began working out, and was encouraged to try out for the wrestling team. Wrestling changed his life. He did so well wrestling in high school Murphy tried out and was accepted to the Penn State wrestling team.

Now he is a motivational speaker, telling youth how he overcame his obstacles and encouraging them to work to overcome theirs.

He is a wrestler, who talks with enthusiasm, spirit and will power.
