Elected officials and residents got together at 127 Long Beach Road in Island Park on July 22 to see how one homeowner is rebuilding his home after it was devastated by Hurricane Sand nine months ago.
The owners of the home, Michael and Gaby Fehling, also own a business, Empire Kayaks, which is right next door to their home.
Town Supervisor Kate Murray told participants that thousands of homeowners face the daunting task of rebuilding in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and one of the town’s jobs is to ensure that they “Rebuild Right,” which is the name of a town program. The Fehling’s home is a prefabricated structure that is placed on elevated piles. “It is an example of a rebuild right project from which homeowners can learn,” Murray said.
