Smoking still kills

To the Editor:

Tobacco is the only product sold today that when used as intended, kills its consumers. A recent report by the American Cancer Society rated the tobacco policies of 201 colleges and universities across New York state. In our area, Suffolk Community College was among the top-ranking institutions when it came to introducing comprehensive policies this fall to protect students and staff from the dangers of tobacco.

On behalf of the American Cancer Society Board of Advisors, we applaud the many schools in New York for their top grades, but encourage all academic institutions on Long Island with lower grades to begin or complete the process of implementing a tobacco-free campus policy. We also call on Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Legislature to pass legislation that requires all New York public colleges to be 100 percent tobacco-free.

While tobacco-free/smoke-free policies have become more popular in recent years, together we must continue to reduce the initiation of tobacco use among young people and help young people and adults who are trying to quit.

Last Thursday was the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smoke Out. Since tobacco use is responsible for nearly 1 in 5 deaths across the U.S., please join me in supporting tobacco-free policies, cessation programs and helping other Long Islanders quit smoking and live healthier lives.

Bravo, Brinton!

To the Editor:

Regarding Scott Brinton’s column “Enough already with the GOP crazy talk” (Nov. 19-25):

At last, someone tells it like it is. Bravo to Brinton on this column! It’s about time. Donald Trump is a performer, not a politician, and his antics put America to shame.
