Oceanside's most important Turkey Shoot ever
Penny Frondelli/Herald
Alex Luongo packed up boxes of pasta at the Turkey Shoot.

Oceanside High School held its annual Turkey Shoot on Tuesday, collecting food to feed the needy families of Oceanside.

Normally, students at OHS collect food and package it in baskets, which Oceanside Community Service donates to families in the community along with a turkey.

But because of Sandy, things changed this year. Oceanside Community Service didn’t give out turkeys, knowing that many of the families who would be receiving them wouldn’t have power or the appliances to store and cook them. And instead of creating baskets for individual families, the students at OHS organized the food by type.

Oceanside Community Service is working with the Interfaith Council to host a Thanksgiving dinner at the high school. After the meal (at which they expect to feed hundreds) OCS will allow families to take food from the more than 100 baskets worth that OHS students collected — the most successful Turkey Shoot the school has ever run.
