School 4 students build an arcade

Inspired by the short documentary film ‘Caine’s Arcade,’ students at School No. 4 constructed their own arcade games using cardboard and everyday objects including paper clips, string, aluminum foil, magnets and fabric. Among the games were miniature versions of golf, bowling, basketball and fishing, and classic arcade games like the ring toss.

Janet Otis, a first grade teacher, invited her students’ parents and first graders from other classes to play the games her class designed. Lucas Galvez and James McGrath worked together on the fishing game that was one of the most popular among the class’s visitors. Colorful paper fish with clips attached lay in a cardboard box waiting to be caught, while players used a rod with a magnet on the end of a string as bait.

‘Caine’s Arcade’ is a short film about a 9-year-old boy named Caine Monroy who built an arcade and ran it out of his dad’s auto parts store in Los Angeles. His arcade was discovered by filmmaker Nirvan Mullick.
