Speed camera placed outside Oceanside High School

Speeders beware—you’re on camera.

Oceanside was one of four school districts, along with Hicksville, North Merrick and Plainedge, to be outfitted with mobile speed cameras on September 15. In addition, fixed cameras were placed in the Greenvale, Jericho, Levittown and West Hempstead school districts, bringing Nassau County’s total to 23. Cameras are expected to be placed in all 56 school districts by the end of the year.

Each of the sites where mobile cameras were placed tested the cameras over the summer. After $2.4 million in fines resulted—motorists complained that they were not made aware of the cameras, and the county admitted that camera malfunctions were responsible for 9,807 citations—Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano dismissed nearly 40,000 tickets.
