Town extends post-Sandy permit fees

Posted

Supervisor Anthony J. Santino and Councilman Anthony D’Esposito announced today that the Town of Hempstead would continue waiving Building Department permit fees for residents who are continuing to repair and reconstruct their homes from damage caused by Superstorm Sandy.

The TOH is one of the only Long Island municipalities to have waived permit fees for Sandy-related structural repairs, a policy that has been in place since the storm’s immediate aftermath. The fee waiver will be extended through the end of 2016 under a proposal being presented to the Hempstead Town Board on July 5.

“Superstorm Sandy may be a distant memory for many in the Town of Hempstead, but for victims who lost their homes and property, the recovery process remains a part of their everyday lives,” stated Santino. “Waiving building permit fees through the end of the year is one way that we can continue assisting residents in need.”

In the Building Department, all town fees will continue to be waived through December 31, 2016 for Sandy-related structural repairs that conform to original dimensions and specifications, commonly referred to as “in-kind” repairs/replacement. Residents of incorporated villages should check requirements of their local villages. The fee waiver extension will be sponsored by Santino and D’Esposito at the upcoming Town Board meeting on July 5.

“Having served as the 1st Assistant Chief of the Island Park Fire Department during Superstorm Sandy, I witnessed firsthand the devastation affecting local communities,” said D’Esposito. “I thank Supervisor Santino for his leadership during the storm’s aftermath, and for his continued commitment to town residents rebuilding their homes and livelihoods.”
