Letter to the Editor: We cannot afford to lose Bottitta

To the Editor:

I was disappointed that the Herald failed to endorse the incumbent Josephine Bottitta in her bid for re-election to the Malverne UFSD Board of Education. Bottitta is the current president of the Board and, as the Herald explicitly acknowledges, has done an outstanding job in the position. The public meetings are run professionally and efficiently and under Bottitta's leadership all members of the board have found a way to work together without personal conflict.

Bottitta has also worked tirelessly over the past ten years to promote enrollment in the district through the group that she co-founded, Project Enroll Now, and to improve communications between the public and the Board. Our schools are receiving national recognition and by every measure student performance has improved since Bottitta has been in office. Bottitta is a lawyer with a great deal of experience in contracts and labor negotiations. This school district is very lucky to have someone with her skill set be willing to take on such a difficult and time consuming position.

Jan Kasal is a fine candidate and I admire his volunteer charity efforts and his courage in speaking out about the current problems with education reform. But there are numerous other issues that have to be addressed by the Board and Josephine Bottitta simply brings a great deal more to the table in the role of School Board Trustee. We cannot afford to lose her.
