College athletes pass on their skills to young players

Ballin’ with Hofstra at the JCC

Posted

The Hofstra Pride men’s basketball team held their second annual free basketball clinic at the Barry and Florence Friedberg Jewish Community on the evening of Jan. 9. “We’re a local JCC and Hofstra’s just 20 minutes away,” Larry Weissman, the JCC Basketball Coordinator told the Herald. “We’ve got a great relationship with them.”

The children were split into 4 different drill groups and rotated through a series of passing, shooting and defensive drills run by the Pride players. Weissman said he thought the kids enjoyed the lateral defensive drill the most. It involved hitting the ground with their hands, shouting, rushing an offender and trying to slap the ball out of his hands, and then side-stepping away. “The kids got to scream,” he said. “That made it even more fun for them.”
