Lynbrook Atria residents express their gratitude to Nassau County police officers

Posted

There was meaning behind every gift that Lynbrook Atria residents put into a care package for Nassau County police officers last week. Lifesavers candies were given because of the lives the officers protect. A payday candy bar was symbolic of how the officers don’t just do their job for the money. Gum was a reminder of how they always stick together.
In recognition of World Gratitude Day, which is set for Sept. 21 this year, residents of the assisted living facility put together kits for members of the 4th precinct of the NCPD. In doing so, they promoted kindness and good will.
“I came up with the idea because it’s something that’s close to my heart and something I like to do,” said Nathan Schafroth, the engage life director for Atria Lynbrook, on choosing to give back to police. “[Police officers] get a lot of negative feedback when they shouldn’t.”
The event was part of a company-wide initiative for Atria, in which facilities across the U.S. and Canada show their gratitude to emergency personnel, veterans, people who run animal shelters, first responders and anyone who makes a difference in their community.
Schafroth said making gift kits for police officers began last year, and added that it will likely continue as a yearly tradition. He said he and five residents of Atria made about 50 bags, filled with candy and other goodies, and delivered them to the precinct themselves on Sept. 12.
“They really appreciate what we do for them because a lot of times people don’t appreciate what cops do,” Schafroth said. “The residents love it, too. They really like doing stuff for the community and volunteering.”
Atria has also created a website for World Gratitude Day, which can be found at www.gogratefulnow.com.
