Nassau police identify sword-wielding man who was shot and killed after lunging at officers in Oceanside

Nassau County police have identified an Oceanside man who was shot and killed by officers last week after charging at them while wielding knives and a Samurai sword.

According to police, Brian Rodden, 36, was the man shot inside his Columbus Avenue home in Oceanside on Sept. 17 at 6:02 p.m.

Rodden, who lived at home with his father, was involved in a verbal domestic dispute with his father and sister before police arrived.


Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder was on the scene, and said the man was instructed by officers more than once to stand down. He began to lunge at the officers, and two of them shot him. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:48 p.m.

According to police, four officers were injured responding to this incident. One suffered a back injury while performing CPR in an attempt to revive the man after he was shot. Another was hurt during an altercation with the man. One was injured in an accident on the way to the scene and was hospitalized. It was unclear how the fourth officer was hurt.

The police said an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
