After seeing what appeared to be a drug transaction in Island Park, Nassau County police arrested Darius Nellums, 49, of Long Beach, on July 5 at 7:25 p.m. He was arrested and charged with assault, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance, police said.

Authorities reported that, after seeing the alleged transaction, they stopped Nellums who was driving a white 2004 Chevrolet Express van at the, intersection of Austin Boulevard and Vanderbilt Avenue.

As officers approached the vehicle, Nellums reportedly attempted to put it into drive. One officer reached his arm inside the vehicle window and a second opened the passenger-side door in an effort to stop him from driving away. Both officers were dragged roughly five feet before the van struck three other vehicles and came to a stop.

Nellums tried to run off and was then apprehended. Upon searching the center console of the van, police discovered 20 individually wrapped bags of what they believe to be heroin.

He was charged with violating several vehicle traffic laws, third and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree assault, three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, unlawful imprisonment, three counts of second-degree reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and obstruction of government administration.
