Republican incumbent John McLaughlin and Democratic newcomers Mike Fagen and Len Torres racked up the most votes for three seats in the Long Beach City Council election on Tuesday.

McLaughlin received the most votes, 3735, with Fagen garnering 3689 and Torres collecting 3601 in the at-large election, in which the top three vote-getters win seats, the top two for four years and the third for two years.

Democrat candidate Fran Adelson received 3590 votes, while Republican candidates Maureen Doherty and Marvin Weiss got 3551 and 3456 votes.

With McLauglin’s victory, the Republicans retain a 3-2 majority on the council, which includes Thomas Sofield Jr. and Mona Goodman. Democrats Denise Tangney and Lenny Remo will step down from the council at year’s end.

In the race for City court judge, Republican Frank Dikranis defeated Democrat Scott Nigro, 3873 to 3525 votes. Judge Stan Smolkin will retire in December.
