The Irish had another reason to celebrate on St. Patrick’s Day, when Long Beach pro boxer Seanie Monaghan clinched his 13th consecutive win at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night in front of a packed crowd that included hundreds of devoted Long Beach fans.

The Irish pugilist defeated opponent Eric Watkins just before the main event featuring Sergio Martinez and Matthew Macklin, broadcast on HBO. Monaghan is now 13-0, with eight knockouts, and is ranked 96th in the world.

Watkins, a former cruiserweight and a relative unknown who is now 6-2, started off aggressively in the opening round but was ultimately overwhelmed by Monaghan, who dominated throughout the fight.

According to Boxingscene.com, Monaghan won a “hard fought” unanimous decision in a “mostly dominant performance that left his fans cheering his every punch.”

“Took care of another tough customer last night,” Monaghan wrote on Facebook. “I refuse to lose in front of my Long Beach army … I love all you guys and couldn't do it without you.”
