“I have made it abundantly clear to the State Department that no resource should be spared in the search for Mr. Bobis, no stone should be left unturned, and that Mr. Bobis’s family must have every iota of assistance available from the U.S. government during this difficult time,” U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said in a statement.

U.S. Rep. Peter King said that he has been helping Daniel’s mother, Jasmine, obtain a new passport because hers expired. “We’ve been talking primarily with the embassy in Indonesia, and they’ve been cooperative,” King told the Herald on Monday. “We’re hearing, however, that there has been difficulty with the search due to weather.”

As the conditions improved on Tuesday, friends said that a helicopter, a dive team, local fishing boats and others searched for Bobis in the water and along the coast for hours, to no avail. Rachel Bobis and Lonergan have also been searching.

“We respectfully ask that people urge our government and the Indonesian government to keep up the effort and use all the resources at their disposal,” said Bobis’s close friend Maurice Mitchell. “All the help has been great, but even more will be helpful and appreciated. There have been added resources, but there is a feeling that more can be done.”

Mitchell said that Bobis expressed his intention to start a family with Rachel, whom he wed in 2008, when he returned from the trip, which he had been planning for months.

“He couldn’t wait to go — he was coming into the shop often to get gear,” said longtime friend Dave Juan, owner of Unsound Surf, who often surfs with Bobis. “He surfed Laurelton all the time, which is a real local spot.”

Bobis, who has a third-degree black belt in karate and plays drums in a local rock band, Cipher, grew up in Long Beach and is a leader in the local surf community. He is a founding member of the Long Beach Surfer’s Association and launched the high school’s first competitive surf team and club — the only one of its kind in the state. A 1997 graduate of Long Beach High, he has taught math there for seven years, school officials said. Students and staff describe him as a well-liked teacher and a vital part of the school community.
