The Long Island Rail Road and City of Long Beach held a summer kick-off event at Manhattan’s Penn Station on June 18, to inform New Yorkers about special package deals to some of the best Long Island destinations.

Surfers and lifeguards from Long Beach also attended the press conference, with surfboards in tow, to represent Long Beach and promote its summer activities that can be reached easily via the LIRR.

“Long Beach draws thousands of visitors each summer from New York City and from other parts of Long Island and we’ve been working closely with the LIRR to make sure visitors know that one of the best ways to get to Long Beach is via the LIRR. The LIRR Station puts you just steps away from the beach and the boardwalk,” said City Councilman Anthony Eramo.

The special Long Beach package fare is $22 from New York and Brooklyn, and $18.75 from Jamaica. Hourly service is available from Penn Station, Brooklyn and Jamaica with direct weekend service from Penn Station. LIRR weekday service begins June 21 and continues through Labor Day, Sept. 1.

“Long Island has some of the most desirable beaches in the world. And the LIRR can get you where you want to go while saving you time and money,” said LIRR President Patrick Nowakowski.

The LIRR has deals and packages for other Long Island hot spots including Splish Splash, Montauk, and the Hamptons, Jones Beach, Robert Moses Beach, Captree Fishing and eight Fire Island beaches.

“Coming out to Long Island on the Long Island Rail Road is a wonderful way to travel and it’s quick and easy. There are several stops in or near tourist destinations and most times if you let your hotel or B&B know, they’ll pick you up at the station. Otherwise, it’s a quick cab ride,” said Kristen Matejka, director of marketing and communications for the Long Island Convention Visitors Bureau.
