Deli owner: turn the power on!

P.J. Whelan, co-owner of Lindell Deli at 577 W. Park Ave., said the business and apartments upstairs have been without power and heat for more than a month.

The landlord did not return a call for comment. But Barry Minsky, owner of Night Restoration Corp., the company working on the building, said that there was nearly eight-feet of water in the basement and that they had been waiting on LIPA to make the necessary repairs, which include installing the meters at a higher elevation.

“LIPA had to come out because all of the service panels were underwater and they had corroded,” said Minsky, adding that turning on the power could have caused a fire. “Management is doing everything they can; this is not in their control. LIPA was the one who held them back and from the moment they got a hold of LIPA, we put our pedal to the metal to get it done. LIPA came out last Wednesday and authorized us to do a demo service to the building.”

Minsky said that aside from LIPA, the landlord also had to wait on insurance adjusters and a visit from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to inspect the damage.

Minsky, an Oceanside resident who said that his company has provided services at cost for some residents in need, said that Whelan’s claims that both the landlord and Night Restoration have been unresponsive and slow to make the repairs are false.

“We had to clean the place — the whole place was raw sewage,” Minsky said. “The landlord would like nothing more than to get the building back in shape as quick as possible.”

Minsky added, “Right now we got the green light — we filed the job with LIPA and can go ahead and do the work. Basically what we’re doing right now is, we have temporary service and my guy is going over there. Hopefully it will take a few days to do the work. As soon as we finish with the temporary [service], we’ll have the plumber hook up hot water heaters for the people.”

Last Tuesday, Whelan said that Minsky informed him that they would start working on restoring power on Monday.

“We’re hopeful that everything is going to be restored to its pre-Sandy condition,” Whelan said. “I think it could have been addressed sooner — many other businesses are coming back and there’s always a workable solution.”

Many of us had 6'+ of awful water in our basements that had to be pumped out and the space then cleaned. Many of us have had to replace boilers and hot water heaters and electrical panels and meters before any insurance adjusters or FEMA inspectors came, and we have been scrambling 10 ways to Sunday to pay for these repairs before the insurance money comes. ALL of the information that has come from the insurance companies, city government and Governor Cuomo's office has that repairs to save buildings from further damage SHOULD be made asap. Owners have been responsible to document damage with pictures and keep excellent financial records and then they have been able to proceed with essential repairs. Major electrical repairs, including on electrical meters, can and have been done by licensed electricians throughout Long Beach, with LIPA's blessing. For the representative of the restoration company to say that the landlord HAD to wait to proceed due to waiting for LIPA and insurance adjusters and FEMA is false, and a poor excuse to cover up the irresponsible and disrespectful inaction by the landlord.

Long Beach and especially the Westholme community depend on the Lindell Deli. The Whelan family has always been generous & kind to the community and we need their deli back NOW!!! Many families live in that building and NEED heat and electricity to survive. I encourage all supporters of the Lindell Deli to call and/or write to the LB Building Department (516-431-1005) and to any media outlet to which they have access to report this landlord's failures and to ask the City/County/LIPA management to facilitate in any and all ways possible the swift reopening of the Lindell Deli & the re-habitation of that building by those who live there. Action is needed NOW to help this 40 year family business reopen--support the Lndell Deli, the Whelans, and the building residents today!!!

I remember the store location 1947/1953 but I don't remember if it was a deli.
