A week before the Sept. 10 Democratic primary for Long Beach City Council, two prominent lawmakers have thrown their support behind a separate slate of candidates running for three open council seats.

This week, U.S. Rep. Kathleen Rice announced her support for incumbent City Council President Len Torres, Councilman Anthony Eramo, and candidate Karen Adamo, who have the backing of the Long Beach Democratic Committee.

“Len Torres, Anthony Eramo and Karen Adamo are effective leaders, reformers and tireless advocates for the people of Long Beach,” Rice said in a statement. “They’ve worked hard to help this community recover from Superstorm Sandy, and we’ll continue working together to keep the recovery going and rebuild Long Beach better and stronger than ever.”

“The endorsement from Kathleen Rice is really important because she’s been very instrumental in helping us rebuild Long Beach, including the $9 million we’ve just received from FEMA,” Torres said. “She’s been very helpful, along with [Governor] Cuomo and [Senator] Schumer. We’ve supported her ever since she came into office, and we are very grateful that she’s stepping out and endorsing our administration, which has achieved so much.”

State Assemblyman Todd Kaminsky, meanwhile, announced his support for candidates Dave Yolinsky, a former city firefighter now working in Scarsdale, and Anissa Moore, a professor at Nassau Community College, who have the backing of the Nassau County Democratic Committee.

“I am proud to endorse Dave Yolinsky and Anissa Moore,” Kaminsky said in a statement. “Dave and I worked closely together to help Long Beach recovery after Superstorm Sandy, and I’ve been impressed with Anissa’s vision for our community. I know that both ... will be the independent thinkers we need here in Long Beach.”

“I’m very honored to be endorsed by Assemblyman Kaminsky,” Yolinsky said. “He is someone I looked up to when I first decided to get involved in politics, and I look forward to working with him in the future.”
