Flooding and school information for Island Park

Posted

There is flooding once again in Island Park. Roads began to flood Thursday night, and as the rain continued Friday morning the waters continued to rise. With a new moon and high tide at 8:21 a.m. set at 4.79 feet above normal some roads will be covered with water. Low tide is at 2:20 this afternoon but it is only projected to be down .69 feet, so roads may remain flooded all day.

Today's ribbon cutting for the new playground at Lincoln Orens has been canceled.

The Island Park School District has advised:

Due to the new moon, high tide, and coastal storm, there is flooding. All early morning activities at Hegarty and Lincoln Orens Schools are cancelled but schools will be open today. If your child is scheduled to take a bus to school, please be sure to have your child do so. This is the safest mode of transportation. If the bus cannot get to your child’s stop, another bus will be sent when the water recedes at about 11 a.m. If your child walks to school, please have your child do so when the sidewalks and streets are clear; it is best not to drive to either of the schools. If you do not believe the situation is safe for your child for any reason, please use your judgment and have your child stay home or come to school late. Students will be welcomed at whatever time they arrive. Pickups for high school and private school students will remain as usual since they are picked up early.

The National Weather Service is forecasting rain and possibly a thunderstorm between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., then a chance of rain after 2 p.m. High temperature near 53 degrees. East wind 13 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

In addition the weather service has issued a coastal flood warning in effect from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. this evening.

This story will be updated through the day.
