Getting into the swing of a new school year

Posted

It’s that time of the year again: the air begins to cool, the leaves change colors and cover lawns, and pumpkin-spiced treats once again become the specials. As October arrives, the students at Hewlett High School fall back into their routines. Club meetings start up again, sports seasons are in full swing and students study hard for their first exams of the year.

Although in the same building with the same bells, student experiences at Hewlett High in the fall are far from the same.

Freshmen hurry through the hallways, just beginning to remember the fastest way to get from class to class. They are starting to learn the ins-and-outs of the high school building, and the familiar faces that come with it. They are both excited and nervous as their high school career begins, unsure what the next four years will bring. Studying hard for their first tests and essays, they feel as if they have finally entered high school.

Sophomores walk the hall with some confidence, as they are no longer the young freshmen of the school. They know what to expect as another school year takes off.

Juniors, too, are confident in their routine day at school. They are enthusiastic yet slightly fearful of the stresses of the stigmatized 11th grade year. Buzz words — college, ACTs, SATs — enter their daily vocabulary as they are ready to start preparing for their post-high school education, even though they are only half way through high school.

And for us seniors, the beginning of the school year is bittersweet. Filled with both disbelief and excitement that our final year is now upon us, we know that this year will be full of firsts and lasts. We will experience our first college acceptances and our first plan for after high school. But we will also experience our last Homecoming, our last Sports Night, and our last round of Advanced Placement exams — finally! As a grade that has mostly been together from pre-K to senior year, it dawns on us that this is our last year together as classmates, seeing each other each and every day. But we know that this year will be filled with many exciting events, and we will try to make all of our “lasts” the best ones yet.

Even though we are in different places in our high school careers, we are all excited as we gear up for this week’s Homecoming festivities — with Spirit Week, a pep rally, the Homecoming parade and the anticipated football game this Saturday. Come cheer on the Hewlett Bulldogs!
