A two-car auto accident on Lido Boulevard halted traffic and required multiple helicopters to respond to the scene early Friday morning.

The Nassau County Police Department reported an accident on Lido Boulevard near the entrance to Camp Anchor at 8:23 a.m. where the two drivers were trapped inside of their cars.

The Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department and Nassau County Emergency Service Unit responded to the accident, located in front of 630 Lido Blvd., and took 25 minutes to free one of the drivers from the wreck.

Point Lookout-Lido Fire Chief Brian Guerin said the head-on accident between a car and small SUV caused serious injuries to both drivers, and they were transported by helicopter to the Nassau University Medical Center.

East bound lanes were closed on Lido Boulevard, causing long traffic delays in the Long Beach area.

Guerin, who directed all fire department operations, said the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
