Ice skating returning to Kennedy Plaza

City, chamber effort aimed at helping local businesses

Ice skating will return to Kennedy Plaza on Valentine’s Day weekend as part of the first of two planned shopping initiatives by the city and the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce.

The city constructed a similar rink back in December as part of its Christmas tree-lighting ceremony, which many officials say also gave local businesses a boost. The outdoor rink consisting of artificial ice will again be constructed in the plaza, and businesses can register for pop-up tents around the ice. The goal, city and chamber officials said, is to draw more shoppers and their families into the city’s dining and shopping district.

“It all centers around the ice skating and having a good time in the center of town, and we hope the businesses will see some of the benefit of that,” chamber President Mark Tannenbaum said.

Patricia Bourne, the city’s director of economic development, said the event is open to everyone — not just couples looking for a night out on Valentine’s Day.

“We think of Valentine’s Day as a time for couples, but it’s also a day about love and giving,” Bourne said. “So we’re encouraging people to come out by having events that are fun for families. Bring a friend or a neighbor. It’s not just for couples.”

“This is another example of our Department of Economic Development rolling up their sleeves, working with the Chamber of Commerce and the community to put on an event that will not only be fun and family oriented but support local businesses,” added City Manager Jack Schnirman.

The event will provide an opportunity for area businesses to offer special Valentine’s promotions and deals. The city will also be giving away complimentary hot chocolate, and there will be entertainment on the bandstand. A set of wedding rings donated by Jewelry by Steven will also be raffled off.

“We are constantly looking for new, exciting and special events to offer our residents and visitors. Our Valentines Weekend Ice on the Plaza promises to be fun and have something for everyone to enjoy,” Councilman Scott Mandel said in a statement.

The rink will be open on Friday, Feb. 13, from 4 to 8 p.m., Feb. 14, from noon till 8 p.m., and Feb. 15, from noon to 6 p.m. Admission is $5 per person, which includes ice skate rentals.
