Long Beach police say man was shot in the arm

Long Beach police are investigating a shooting at the Channel Park Homes that left one man injured on Sunday.

Police said that they received a 911 call at 11:38 p.m. reporting that a man had been shot at the apartment complex, at 500 Center St. Officers who responded to the scene found the victim with a gunshot wound to his right arm. The man was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital for medical treatment and evaluation.

Police said that the investigation is ongoing and did not release further details. Police Commissioner Michael Tangney was not immediately available for comment.

The incident comes on the heels of last November’s late-night shooting near the Channel Park Homes that left one man injured after more than 30 shots were fired.

That incident — in which police said that two gang members from Far Rockaway and Inwood came to Long Beach looking for the 26-year-old victim, also from Inwood — had a number of residents in the 130-unit complex and other parts of the city on edge. Residents said that some of the rounds entered two apartments and some cars in the area.

A community rally was subsequently held at the complex, where about 100 residents joined city officials to protest gun violence and gang activity, and Tangney and community leaders urged residents to speak up and put aside fears of being a “snitch.”
