Lindsey was charged three counts of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and two counts of official misconduct.

A spokesman for Rice said the indictment was unsealed on Wednesday, before the arrest. Lindsey was arraigned before Nassau County Court Judge Anthony Paradiso, who set bail at $20,000 cash or bond. She faces up to nine years in prison if convicted of the top charges. Lindsey pleaded not guilty, and is due back in court on Oct. 30.

Lindsey's attorney, Dana Grossblatt, said that her client has since posted bail. She added that it was her Lindsey’s first arrest and believes she will be “vindicated.”

In a separate complaint, Rice said Lindsey was also charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor, and possession of marijuana, a violation. She will be arraigned on those charges in Long Beach City Court on Oct. 29. She faces up to one year in jail if convicted of the top charge in that case.

Lindsey has since been fired, officials said.

“This administration has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes employee misconduct, and when our Police Department uncovered what was going on they worked with the District Attorney to investigate and root out the problem,” City Manager Jack Schnirman said in a statement.

The arrest comes at a time when the Long Beach Police Department has joined forces with local community groups to address substance and alcohol abuse, including the growing “heroin epidemic” in the area.

“The Long Beach Police Department is committed to combating this heroin epidemic, which is destroying lives and families,” Lt. Stefan Chernaski said in a statement. “Our Narcotics Task Force will continue to aggressively target all drug dealers and bring them justice.”

In recent months, the rampant use of heroin on Long Island has become more apparent, local officials said, and caused concern among residents in Long Beach, especially after two fatal heroin overdoses occurred in the same day in February.
