Long Beach police are investigating a shooting last week after a man was treated at South Nassau Communities Hospital following a gunshot wound to his buttock — an incident that police officials say was likely accidental.

LBPD spokesman Lt. Eric Cregeen said South Nassau contacted Long Beach police on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 2:30 a.m. after the 31-year-old victim, a Long Beach resident, checked himself in to the hospital’s emergency room. The victim’s name was not released, and the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. The victim told police the shooting took place on West Market Street.

“South Nassau called LBPD and stated that they had a walk-in gunshot [victim], and he stated to them that the shooting happened in Long Beach,” Cregeen said. “We learned that the aided was shot on the right side near his hip by a small caliber round. The only information that he was willing to provide is that he was shot somewhere in the area of West Market Street. He contends he was shot by someone.”

However, while the investigation is ongoing, police officials on Wednesday said that the shooting was accidental based on early forensic evidence, and claim that the victim discharged the weapon and shot himself.
