Nassau County and Long Beach police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in the Channel Park Homes early Saturday morning.

Long Beach Police Commissioner Mike Tangney said that the incident occurred at 1 a.m. at the apartment complex, at 500 Center St., when a 28-year-old Long Beach man was shot and killed. The victim’s name was not released.

“The incident occurred at 1 a.m., it was a shooting in the Channel Park Homes, and it was fatal,” Tangney said. “We have a full investigation going on, and the Nassau County Police Department is involved with Long Beach detectives.”

A spokeswoman for the NCPD would only describe the investigation on Saturday as “active.”

The victim was transported to South Nassau Communities Hospital after he was shot multiple times, a relative of the victim said.

The incident comes after residents of the Channel Park Homes held a number of rallies and vigils calling for an end to the gun violence that has erupted at the apartment complex in recent months and over the past year. There have also been a number of community meetings with police and city officials to address safety concerns.

Last month, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer entered the fray when he called on the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to approve a $250,000 grant for additional security measures at the complex, including the installation of surveillance cameras as well as computer and Internet systems at Channel Park.

In August, Schumer said that since October, there have been 80 incidents, including family offenses, burglaries, disorderly conduct, assault, drug use and sales, and criminal mischief, most of which have occurred in the common areas of the Channel Park Homes, where the new cameras would be positioned.

According to the Long Beach Housing Authority, which operates the Channel Park Homes and applied for the federal grant, there have been a number of gun- and gang-related incidents at the housing development.

Tangney, however, said that while the investigation into Saturday's deadly shooting is ongoing, investigators do not believe it was gang-related.

“We have no reason to believe it was gang-related, no reason at all,” he said.
