South Nassau Communities Hospital will hold another community information session on Thursday, April 9, from 6 p.m.-to-8 p.m. at the Long Beach Public Library, 111. W. Park Ave.

The Information Night follows the hospital’s Information Day at the Long Beach Hotel last month, where 100 residents heard from hospital representatives about South Nassau’s plans to build a new off-campus, hospital-based emergency department on the former Long Beach Medical Center property that would operate 24/7 and accept ambulances.

The $30 million to $40 million facility could also have suites for family medicine, behavioral health, dialysis and ambulatory surgery.

Plans call for the facility to be built on the south side of East Bay Drive, on property formerly occupied by abandoned homes that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy. While South Nassau works to upgrade its urgent-care center into a temporary emergency department by July 1, the 30,000-square-foot pavilion would be the permanent facility hospital officials said they envisioned.

Some residents and city officials, however, criticized the timing of the March 18 forum that was held from noon to 6 p.m., saying that it was inconvenient, and called on South Nassau to hold evening sessions.

“Some residents requested an evening session and South Nassau officials are responding to meet that need,” the hospital said in a press release.

The second in a series of information sessions, South Nassau will again preview its plans to provide additional healthcare services on the barrier island.

The Information Night, according to South Nassau, will feature a series of visual displays that residents may view while speaking one-on-one with South Nassau medical and administrative staff. Staff will be available throughout the evening, so residents may arrive at any time during the session.
