Long Island’s South Shore will be under a flood and high wind warning on Monday into Tuesday as a nor’easter churns up the Atlantic Coast, according to the National Weather Service. Residents can expect sustained winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour, with gusts up to 50 miles per hour, along with rain and higher-than-usual tides.

Low-lying communities such as Long Beach and Freeport should anticipate water in the streets where flooding normally occurs.

The weather service has issued the following warnings for Nassau throughout the day into Tuesday:

• Jan. 23, 4:16 a.m. to 11 p.m.: Coastal flood warning.

• Jan. 23 at 3:48 a.m. to Jan. 24 at 11 a.m.: High wind warning.

All downed power lines, even if not moving or sparking, should be considered dangerous, according to PSE&G. Stay at least 300 feet away from all downed wires and keep others from going near them as well. Call PSE&G at (800) 436-7734 or the police or fire department immediately to report a downed wire.
