Spiritedly showing the blue and white

Posted

Lawrence Woodmere Academy’s Homecoming is just around the corner! As part of the preparation for our big day on Saturday, students had the opportunity to break from the school dress code and dress up for the fun days of Spirit Week.

Students can find a friend to match with for Twin Day, wear some funky outfits for Throwback Thursday and show their school spirit for Blue and White Day, the school colors. This is the most exciting week of the year — besides the week of our final exams, of course!

Though the entire student body and faculty love to show their enthusiasm, the seniors tend to have the most fun. Many of them enjoy coming in the Thursday night before Homecoming and decorating the entire school with blue and white.

Encouraging words are written on the lockers, blue and silver sparkles are spread around the hallway and festive beads are hung on the doorways. The seniors love to make sure everyone is energetic and high-spirited when they come to school on the day of the Pep Rally.

Every year, the Dance Club puts together dances to some cool hip-hop songs for the Pep Rally on Friday. The lights go down and the music goes up as everyone tries to follow the club’s hot dance moves. After the Dance Club, it’s time for the athletes to shine. Different sports teams, ranging from volleyball to soccer to cross-country, fire up a crowd of young kids — whose faces are halfway-painted with blue and white — through cheers and high-fives. The seniors of each sports team run through a handmade banner as it is their last Pep Rally. At the end of Pep Rally, the upper school students crank up the music and have a dance party to their favorite tunes until the school buses come to pick them up.

On Friday night, many of the students’ favorite teachers have a faculty show for the school community. Funny skits and corny jokes allow the teachers’ to have fun as their students cheer them on. Students, teachers, and parents wake up bright and early on Saturday to help set up for Homecoming. Bouncy houses are inflated, delicious food is prepared, and fun games are set up. Both the boys’ and girls’ varsity soccer teams play their annual games and the Dance Club shows their performances to those who missed out at Pep Rally.

Homecoming is a fun time for the LWA community to come together to show their school spirit. Before they know it, the students and teachers will be back in the classrooms learning from one another. At least it’s not finals week.
