Nassau County police shut down a stretch of Lido Boulevard in Lido Beach on Monday following a head-on collision involving a mini-bus and sport utility vehicle just before 5:30 p.m., and one of the victims had to be airlifted to a local hospital.

According to Brian Guerin, assistant chief of the Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department, the incident occurred just east of the Malibu Beach Club entrance, when the yellow mini-bus and SUV collided.

“It would appear they were each going in different directions, one eastbound and one westbound,” Guerin said.

Guerin said that the two female drivers sustained serious injuries, and about 25 firefighters responded to the scene. There were no passengers in either vehicle, he said.

“Both of them were transported to Nassau University Medical Center, one by ambulance and one by helicopter,” said Guerin.

Nassau County police shut down Lido Boulevard eastbound, which caused massive delays during the evening rush hour.

"It was bad," one motorist posted on Facebook. "I was stuck in it. Looked bad I didn't see any kids on the bus thank God."

After 7 p.m., Guerin said that one lane remained open in each direction and traffic was moving again.

Guerin said the cause of the crash has yet to be determined, and said it was unclear whether the mini-bus belonged to the school district or an independent company. Operations were under the command of PLLFD Chief Dan Wiener.
