Valley Stream scout gives back in Malverne

There’s been a lot of activity going on at Malverne American Legion Post #44, thanks to prospective Eagle Scout, David Matos.

Matos, 18, a Valley Stream Central High School senior, was in the final stage of competing his Eagle Scout project last weekend: renovating the second floor office of the Post.

“The American Legion has helped the scouts, and I just wanted to give back,” said Matos, who said the post had sent him to Boys State to participate in their leadership program. Boys State is educational program that teaches scouts about government.

The office renovation, which has been ongoing since mid-October, was completed Nov. 27 by Matos and a team of fellow scouts that volunteered to help him. Over the course of the past two months, the boys prepped the walls, spackled, sanded, primed and painted the walls and anything else that needed it. Matos belongs to Troop 109 in Valley Stream and has been a scout for the past six years.
