East Meadow Chamber of Commerce honors graduating seniors

Four graduating seniors in the East Meadow School District stood out as volunteers, role models and scholars over the past four years. For their achievements, the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce has awarded them each with a $1,000 scholarship.

To qualify for the scholarships, outgoing seniors needed to write an essay exemplifying their strengths and submit it, along with a letter of recommendation, to a committee of judges. On the committee are four members of the Chamber of Commerce, including Christine Mooney, Doug Wood Sr., Lyndsey Gallagher and Rosemary Basmajian.

The Chamber of Commerce has an annual tradition of awarding a scholarship to four graduating seniors, but this year also recognized the recipients at a June 6 meeting at Major’s Steakhouse in East Meadow.

Noah Adelman, of East Meadow High School, wrote his essay about living with diabetes and how it has taught him about perseverance and changed his perspective on life. He will be attending the University of Wisconsin in the fall, where he will be studying biomedical engineering.

Kristen Kavanagh, of East Meadow High School, dreams of helping children with special needs and is enrolled in a five-year Master’s program at SUNY Plattsburgh, where she will be studying childhood education as an undergraduate student and special education as a graduate student.

Samir Prejcinovic, of W.T. Clarke High School, will be attending Baruch University in the fall and wrote his essay about his mother, who he called his inspiration.

And in Michael Wood’s essay, the East Meadow High School senior reflected on his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, which caused him to take time off from playing football and spend more time volunteering for his brother’s team. He will be playing football at Hardwick University in the fall.
