Despite the rainy conditions, about 200 people turned out for the 15th annual CURB Bike Ride on Aug. 11.

The family-friendly 10-mile ride — not race — around town hits many popular spots along its route, including the West End, the Canals, Bay Drive along Reynolds Channel and the boardwalk.

The tradition began 15 years ago when three teenagers fulfilled their dream of cycling around Long Beach, and it grew into an annual event. The effort has raised more than $100,000 for Citizens United to Remove Barriers, a local nonprofit organization that works to build curb cuts, ramps, supply equipment and raise awareness of the needs of the physically challenged.

Founded by late Long Beach resident Jim Conlon, the group aims to make streets and sidewalks more accessible to people in wheelchairs.

According to CURB’s website, the organization’s primary mission is “to provide concrete solutions to removing barriers which prevent participation in community life.”
