Hewlett High School senior Rom Raviv, a member of National Council of Jewish Women-Peninsula Section’s Generation Next, wrote a letter to federal, state and local officials to have them proclaim Oct. 11 as Day of the Girl Child in connection with the United Nations’ international day.

Generation Next teenagers are educated about the issues that face young women in the U.S. and around the world including breast ironing, compromised education, human trafficking and being marginalized. The teens also speak about the issues and educate their peers.

This year, State Sen. Todd Kaminsky responded to Raviv’s letter and presented him with the proclamation on Sept. 19. In the past, U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and Congresswomen Carolyn McCarthy and Kathleen Rice, have responded by recognizing the day through letters, citations, or proclamations. Raviv was the first Generation Next male to speak out.
