Stew Leonard’s, community leaders lend a hand to those in need

Local needy families won’t go hungry this Thanksgiving season thanks to the efforts of community leaders who joined at Stew Leonard’s on Nov. 8 to giveaway over 500 turkeys to hundreds of Nassau County families and local charities.

Stew Leonard Jr. was joined by East Meadow Fire Chief Philip Fertitta, Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen, Nassau County Police Benevolent Association President James McDermott and dozens of local cops and firefighters.

"People don't realize that so many of their neighbors are hungry,” said Supervisor Gillen. “It's truly a silent scourge in our community. To see our corporate neighbors, like Stew Leonards, reach out to local residents and help hundreds of people during the holiday season have food on the table is a wonderful thing.”

Families and local charities lined up to receive their turkeys as the first responders formed an assembly line, passing them between one-another one-by-one. A huge American Flag was on display off the back of a fire department ladder truck to celebrate the occasion.
