Five members of Boys Scouts Troop 336 were recognized as Eagle Scouts in a special Court of Honor ceremony at the Lynbrook Public Library on May 17. About 100 people filed into the atria at the library to watch the boys receive the honor.

“Tonight, we have the honor and pleasure of recognizing five candidates for the award of Eagle Scout,” Scoutmaster Steve Maroney said. “This is an important and a serious matter.”

Matthew Holquist of East Rockaway and Troy Colannino, Kyle Hassig, Timothy Obanhein and Robert Woll of Lynbrook were each presented certificates. Holquist and Obanhein graduated from Lynbrook High School last year, while the other three scouts are scheduled to graduate this spring.

Each of the scouts held various positions during their tenure with Troop 336 and received countless accolades. “Their efforts culminate tonight in the presentation of their Eagle Scout award,” Maroney said. “The success of these efforts will become evident in the way these Eagle Scouts will set their social patterns for all the lives that they touch.”

Former Scoutmaster and current Committee Chair Steven Muller served as the master of ceremonies. Several elected officials were on hand at the event, including Assemblyman Brian Curran, Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby and Lynbrook Mayor Bill Hendrick.

“I think the boys love this,” Hendrick said. “I think more boys should be involved in scouting. It’s really good for them. I’ve seen boys go into Cub Scouts and blossom.”

Troop 336 is celebrating its 60th year after being chartered in 1957, and is the only Boy Scouts troop exclusively in Lynbrook. It is sponsored by St. James United Methodist Church and its members consist of residents from East Rockaway, Lynbrook, Valley Stream and Malverne — though it is open to all areas in the county.

Including the latest five, Troop 336 has generated 69 Eagle Scouts to date. “We’re all very proud of them that they earned their Eagle Scout award,” Maroney said. “They worked very hard.”
