Former NFL star Donny Brady, who is also a two-time Grey Cup champion in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Eskimos, celebrated the grand opening of Proficient Sports Training on Vincent Avenue in Lynbrook on Feb. 11.

“My goal is to make you better at your sport,” Brady said. “So I’m gonna help you run faster, jump higher and teach you how to move properly as an athlete. Any sport you play, I’m trying to make you get to your highest potential.”

Brady is the founder and CEO of the company, and he said he worked toward opening the facility for seven years. He has a team of five people helping him and has special instructors for baseball and other sports.

Programs in the training facility include weight training, cardio training and on-field training, as well as work out programs with the use of medicine balls, sand bags, weighted vests, bricks, sledgehammers and tires.

“I reached the highest level,” Brady said. “So I understand and I know the time, patience, persistence and hard work you have to put in training-wise to get to that level.”

Brady grew up in Bellmore and went to Wellington C. Mepham High School, where he played football and track. When he went to college, he focused primarily on football. He attended Nassau County Community College and the University of Wisconsin, where he won the Rose Bowl.

He went undrafted, but ended up reaching the NFL, where he played cornerback for three seasons. Brady was a member of the original Cleveland Browns and stayed with them when they moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens. He also had a stint with the Chicago Bears. He played 47 games in the NFL from 1995-98 and recorded 105 tackles, according to Pro Football Reference. Brady eventually moved to Edmonton, Ontario, Canada, where he joined the CFL and won two titles with the Eskimos.

His facility has hundreds of clients of all ages, Brady said. He added that it is usually open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and offers boot camps for adults and training programs for children.

“As long as they put the work in and believe in themselves first and foremost, they can accomplish anything,” Brady said. “As long as you stay with it and give it everything you got, it will carry on throughout your life.”

He said that opening up the 7,500 square-foot facility in Lynbrook was a dream come true. “It felt just like when I walked on that football field,” he said. “A dream. When you follow your path and follow your dream and it comes true because you stayed patient and worked hard, it’s an amazing feeling.”
